Nairobi - The Kenya University Stuff Union (KUSU) has again launched a complaint over the misuse of KES 3.9 billion shillings said to be part of the KES 7.8 billion meant to settle salaries and allowances of university staff countrywide.
KUSU Secretary General Dr Charles Mukwaya said all the university staff will stay off duty if the money was not accounted for.
He further stated that alleged misuse of the funds contravened the agreement that was signed between 2010 and 2013.
“(Walijilipa hao wenyewe, wakalipa wafanyikazi wale ambao tunaita casuals kwa lugha ya kimombo, part time lecturers, wale ambao hawakustahili kulipwa chochote. Wakuu wa vyuo vikuu hawakustahili kulingana na mkataba tuliotia sahihi. Walipunguzisha fedha hizo wakaziweka juu ya kulipa vyuo vikuu ambavyo vilikuwa vinachipuka, pia havikuwa kwenya ule mkataba lakini walituma pesa huko na vyuo vikuu hivyo mpaka saa hizi wanasema hawakupata pesa hizo). They paid themselves, paid what we call casual workers in English, and part time lecturers who were not supposed to be paid anything. University Chancellors were also not supposed to be paid according to what we signed. They took the cash and allocated to emerging universities that were not part of the agreement and the same institution confirm that they still have not received the cash,” Mukwaya said while addressing a press conference in Nakuru.
Mukwaya called for speedy resolution of the issue to avoid disruption of studies at the universities but remained firm that if no action was taken, university staff would have no choice but to take industrial action.
If KUSU makes good their threat to down tools, learning might be greatly affected in the universities.
Past strikes have brought education to a halt.
